Of course, we need to also ask about all the positives, but starting with their traumas helped awaken and open my heart toward them. So, with no real plan, I walked. Asking questions. Listening quietly. Sometimes I would go through the decades of that person’s life. Sometimes I would breath in the strength and stability of the earth and then breathe out sufferings. When I found my mind racing with thoughts of unrelated things, I simply stopped walking. When I refocused, I took another step. This practice was not about distance or time, it was simply walking in a healing way with my ancestor. When I felt like I was finished, I would clutch the rock in my hand and make sure I was touching the earth: bare feet, sitting or lying face down. I said a prayer: “My dear ancestor, I know you suffered deeply. I bless you and wish you well. I let go of the suffering that is passed down through the generations so that our future generations will thrive with compassion. My dear earth, please take these toxins and turn them into flowers.” Then I would leave the rock in that spot. For me, this was very freeing. I do not mean to say that I am free of suffering passed on from past generations—I do have a genetic disease. But now I also have more compassion and greater happiness. Priceless.
The world is learning more and more about generational trauma. These practices motivate me and equip me to not pass on as much of that trauma to future generations.
A related concept, but highly unexplored, is that of generational blessing. What are the blessings—the good things—that our ancestors passed on to us? What are the good things we will pass on to the next generations? But that is a topic for another time.
I have laid out for you how I am trying to work at five generations of healing. I don’t have time to be frozen in bitterness by what the previous generations did or did not do. Healing is about letting go of the things that cannot give life and daily doing the things that can. The healing practices that work for you may well look quite different from the ones that work for me. But I do want to dare you to work at healing your ancestors.
